Ostrava was originally conceived by Micheal Shipp a Cornish mining surveyor who had been working in Czechoslovakia during the Communist era and the area took his fancy. He built the original layout using ETS track, locomotives and rolling stock, to capture the area as he remembered it.
The layout comprises of two main loops with cross-overs and sidings. Within the loops are a turntable with six spurs, two roads into the (Skytrex) loco shed and a coaling stage. At the other end are the pit-head structures and a winding house. The scenery was fairly basic in texture and uniformity of colour as suited Michael; it was the movement that amused him, not so much the finer detail. There were originally just two human figures on the layout.
